Paul Larson, a crew member on the maxicatamaran Doha 2006, which won the Oryx Quest organised by, now bankrupt, Tracy Edwards has told BYM that he has not received his share of the prize money. "We dont even know who owes us the money," said Larson, speaking from on board a multihull in Cadiz "is it Tracy, is it Quest, is it a Qatari?"
When asked whether he knew if the maxi-catamaran's owner had received his share of the £1 million prize, Larson said "We don't even know who the owner is!"
He went on to say that the crew, seen above celebrating the arrival in Doha, after winning the Oryx Cup, were "Rather taken aback to get an empty gold envelope at the prize giving", but said that they had accepted that the money would be in their bank accounts within 10 days. "I don't know where this leaves us." said Larson "We had a great boat, a great team and our wages were paid. We didn't even think about the prize money when we started, because there was no certainty about winning. Then we realised we were likely to win and what we'd do with it became an onboard topic. I don't know where all this leaves us, or anyone else, now. For us, it was just a bonus, the sad thing is that there a lot of people who put an awful lot into the event and haven't got paid."
Asked what he felt about the events that had led up to the bankruptcy, Larson said "No-one was digging in knives, they just expected to get their money when she (Edwards) got the Qatari sponsorship."
BYM News asked Tony Bullimore whether he had received his prize money, for finishing second with Daedalus. He replied "I don't want to discuss it."
