A Guide for Watch Keepers of Large Yachts under Sail and Power
This is the essential manual for all those who stand a navigation watch on the bridge of a yacht when underway or at anchor, and should be used by every yacht Captain and all those aspiring to become one. It outlines the correct protocol for keeping watch to stcw-95 standards and the procedures to be followed on the bridge of every yacht irrespective of the vessels size, flag state or the ensign flying at her stern. It caters specifically to the needs and requirements of large yachts and the professional crews that man them.
Adapted from the International Chamber of Shipping reference work, with full permission, it is packed with essential information and useful checklists and covers: Bridge Organisation; Duties of an OOW; Principles of Operation and Maintenance of equipment including; radar, chart plotters, compasses, echo sounders and AIS Equipment; The Watchkeeping elements of training courses taught by all yacht training schools following the syllabus laid down by The RYA, International Yachtmaster Training and the MCA.
Authors Frances and Michael Howorth are both professional yacht crew and continue to serve as such. They are authors of several books on subjects covering safety at sea, have written safety and training manuals together with many technical reports in the yachting press. They are the creators of the Professional Yacht Log Book published by Reeds. Michael is a member of the Professional Yachtsman’s Association and began his career at sea with the P&O shipping company and served as a Royal Navy Reserve Officer, he is qualified to command yachts to 3000 tons. Frances holds professional yacht master certificates which qualify her to sail as his second in command. Together they have sailed worldwide, Michael in command with Frances sailing as either executive officer or Purser aboard private and crewed charter yachts from 20 to 77 metres.
Master Mariner Paul Hailwood formally a lecturer at Warsash Maritime college and now principle of the Hailwood Consultancy Ltd said “There is a need in the professional yachting industry to provide guidance on the required and expected level of procedures for operating bridge equipment and conduct of the watch” and added that it was “a valuable publication for the professional yachtsman and mariner in general.”
The book is available through all the better nautical bookshops, priced at Ł34 is published in an A4 format with a soft card cover. It is packed full of information and contains many useful checklists and relevant flowcharts. It is well illustrated with many full colour illustrations taken aboard many of todays significant yachts. The book is fully compliant with bridge procedures on vessels equipped with GMDSS radio communications and ISM procedures laid down by the IMO and is written to conform to the MCA Large Yacht Code second edition, as well as yacht codes issued by other authorities. |
