The yacht Land's End, which grounded on a reef in the Gulf of Sagone (top photo)on Tuesday and sank yesterday, is to be examined by French naval divers.

ImageThe tug Abeille Flandres, which had been standing by the yacht, has left to resume her Mediterranean patrol and was replaced, last night, by the 59 metre French Navy patrol boat Arago, with a team of divers on board.

The 400 ton yacht shifted yesterday, in a swell, and is now on the bottom, with her upperworks about 1.5 metres below the surface. (Water depth in the vicinity varies between 5 & 20 metres).

The contract for the plugging, pumping and towage of the vessel that had been signed is now being renegotiated, due to the new situation, and divers from the Arago are to participate in a technical evaluation of the logistics of raising the yacht.

The support vessel Ailette, which had placed a precautionary barrage around the reef where Land's End had been resting, will be joined this morning by another support vessel Chevreuil, carrying depollution equipment and materials. The préfecture maritime stresses that there is no immediate threat of further environmental damage, following the clean up of the original spill, and the Chevreuil has been called to the scene as a preventative measure, since the Land's End is believed to be carrying about 70 tons of diesel.
