Spillage from the 48 metre yacht Land's End, which went onto rocks off Corsica yeaterday, is threaten to contaminate the Liamone beach. The 400 ton vessel, which is aground on an underwater reef, has been holed in two places and is believed to be spilling both diesel fuel and oil from its tanks. The yacht carries 75,000 litres of fuel and 1000 litres of oil.
CROSS Corse has sent boats to the scene to try to prevent further loss of pollutants and contain the slick that, last night, was 1.5 kms long and about 500 metres wide. The coastguard will also supervise attempts to seal the holes in the Land's Ends's hull and then an attempt will be made to refloat the yacht.
Land's End, a British registered vessel with a mixed nationality crew of 12, had 12 passengers on board at the time of the grounding. No-one was injured in the incident.
