Press release:
British Waterways has teamed up with volunteer groups to launch a major spring clean across the Wales & Border Counties Region for the new season – with Northern Waterways Managing Director Derek Cochrane heading the drive.
Four canals were targeted in the big clean up – Montgomery, Swansea, Trent & Mersey and the Shropshire Union.
British Waterways bank staff has linked up with a small army of volunteers to undertake work that will improve the canal side environment for the thousands of visitors that flock to the waterways every summer.
Derek Cochrane said the spring clean had set the scene for the forthcoming season.
“Improvements to the waterway environment are a key aspect of our visitor strategy as well as an integral part of our role in conserving the natural appearance and balance of our waterways,” he said.
The work focused on specific improvements to individual canals, including:
Painting locks and fences on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Middlewich. The Middlewich Clean Team and Trent & Mersey Canal Society volunteers weighed in with a litter pick and scrub clearance.
On the Shropshire Union Canal, the focus was on mile post painting and litter picking around the Nantwich area, with the Shropshire Union Canal Society lending their support.
The Friends of Montgomery Canal were out in force between to support a litter pick along the banks of the canal near Welshpool.
Visitors to Ynysmeudwy Lock on the Swansea Canal will notice improvements following the painting of the lock keeper’s hut and vegetation clearance. In addition, a footbridge was installed across the canal and large amounts of litter and vegetation were removed.
“We are looking to target our resources effectively in areas where we can bring maximum benefits, not only for visiting boaters, walkers, cyclists and anglers but for the communities who live along our waterways,” said Mr Cochrane.
“The contribution made by waterway volunteer groups in the successful delivery of these projects can’t be overstated,” he added. |
