We are now around 75 miles north of the Mascarene Plateau, thewinds have considerably dropped - one minute wind the next it's gone. But, with a little patience and setting up the sails for boat speed which to me, means setting the sails about right. Within a small percentage of being absolutely right, and then sailing the course, but with the aim of getting as much boat speed as possible, is a good way to go. We could set up the sail trim to precisely work with the tell tails, but one has to have somebody continuously trimming the sails, to suit the slightest of wind shifts, which is not particularly the best way forward. Sometimes following the wind shifts is better than sailing the boat in a precise direction. Just like a lot of things in life, one has to bend with the trend.
It's another pitch black night with a slight glow on the horizon, near to what could be shallower waters. The glow is probably from a fishing boat that works out of one of the islands. A lot of the crew are off watch and deep in sleep, James just made some tea for the on watch crew, Goncalo is on the helm, and Simon is reading a book, sitting comfortably on the floor of the cockpit. In these conditions, it's just as well to relax. When the conditions change and it's time to run about the decks and set everything up, sails and sheets etc, all the on Watch crew are on the ball - no wasting time.
