banque populaire v launched - story & pix

I'M FREE

Yesterday, two years after the birth of the project and 18 months after construction started, 40 metre maxi-trimaran Banque Populaire V touched water, in Nantes, France. At 7 am, the doors of Keroman Technologies’ build shed opened to reveal the Banque Populaire maxi-trimaran. The team prepared for the launch and, shortly before midday, the crane lifted the platform of the largest racing trimaran in the world into the water. The complete absence of wind and the professionalism of the team ensured that the operation went smoothly.

Shortly afterward the mast was fitted and maxi-trimaran Banque Populaire V left, under engine, for home port of Lorient. Team Banque Populaire will undergo a battery of tests, at the pontoon, over the next 10 days, then the first sea trials will begin, before the trimaran is christened, in Nantes, on October 4.

CROWD PULLER

There have been two launchings and a christening this week. Two massive multihulls, 90 feet and 131feet, launched and a humble 37 foot lugger christened and guess which attracted the biggest crowd! Makes you think doesn’t it ?

Pete Goss built Spirit of Mystery to highlight the bravery of seven Cornishmen, who used the original Mystery to make the voyage to Melbourne to escape poverty and seek out a new life in Australia. Leaving Newlyn on Saturday 18th November 1854, the Mystery travelled about 11,800 nautical miles in 116 days, before arriving in Melbourne on 14th March 1855. Pete will follow in their wake in a boat that has had history literally built into it, as Pete has sourced wood from Nelson's Victory and the Cutty Sark and a part of the rigging from the SS Great Britain.

CHALLENGING

The waters off Cartagena, a new venue for the MedCup Circuit, are proving challenging for the crews and regatta organisers. The deep waters shelve sharply to the shore and the adjacent steep mountain sides swirl the breezes. These conditions produced choppy, big, disorganised seas and shifty winds, which ranged from 14-21 knots, on day one.

It was a recipe that suited opportunists and smart, slick sailors and Bribon proved it had plenty of both, as it sailed to a regatta lead.

Team CEO and skipper Russell Coutts. “We have learned a lot and developed a lot of new technology in building this boat and I’m really looking forward to testing it on the water.
