Le canal du Rhone à Sète - St Gilles

St Gilles is best known for its abbey, which was founded in the 7th century by the Greek hermit Aegidius.

The abbey is certainly worth an exploration, but there is much more to see and do, in and around St Gilles.

Not to be missed is a visit to the arena for, in bull fighting Camargue style, blood is not shed and the animals, which are revered, return safely to their

paddocks after each contest. In the towns of this area you will often see a statue to a particularly famous bull, or a cross marking its grave.

Several times a year, the bulls are run through the streets, driven by manadiers riding the famous Camargue horses; a spectacle many turn out to see.
